Festival of Dance Gala: Celebrating 100 years – POSTPONED (new date TBC)

Dance Challenge (Graded)

Join us for the Graded Dance Challenge at RAD headquarters: a multi-level, national competition where candidates will be judged on the performance of a solo, choreographed by themselves, their teacher or peer. This competition gives candidates the opportunity to be part of a creative process and to perform in front of an audience.

Celebrating Dame Margot Fonteyn with the Royal Academy of Dance – CANCELLED

Margot Fonteyn is regarded as the most influential ballet dancer of her generation. Join the Royal Academy of Dance during their Centenary year as they celebrate their longest-serving president and her contribution to British Ballet. Alastair Macaulay, chief dance critic for The New York Times (2007-2018), will chair a panel discussion including The Royal Ballet’s Former Principal, Alfreda Thorogood FRAD, and former Director, Dame Monica Mason.

In Conversation with Noma Dumezweni – CANCELLED

Noma Dumezweni starred as Hermione Granger in the original West End and Broadway runs of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which garnered her a second Laurence Olivier Award and a Tony Award nomination. At the V&A Museum in London, Noma will be in conversation with David Jays, editor of the Royal Academy of Dance magazine, Dance Gazette. She will talk about starting life in Swaziland before arriving in England as a refugee; about her diverse career so far and her role as a mentor. Noma is one of three Guest Editors of Dance Gazette in the RAD’s centenary year. A copy of her issue will be available at the event.

Scholarship event and gala performance

To celebrate the centenary, the 14+ Dance Scholarship in 2020 will include a specially commissioned Centenary Variation choreographed by Sarah Foster-Sproull, Creative New Zealand Choreographic Fellow and Royal New Zealand Ballet, Choreographer in Residence. A gala performance of 14+ Scholarship finalists and alumni will also include Harrison James (The National Ballet of Canada), Karen Nanesca (The Australian Ballet) and Rhiannon Fairless (The Royal New Zealand Ballet). Winners will be announced at the end of the evening.
