Genée 2015

The Genee International Ballet Competition 2015 took place from 10 – 19 September with the Semi-finals at Stratford Circus Arts Centre and the Final at Sadler’s Wells in London.

Throughout that 10 day period we packed a lot in, with early morning photo shoots at London landmarks including stunning photography of dancers at the Millennium Bridge from Getty Images, as well as pop-up dance events at Broadgate Circle in the business district and King's Cross Station.

After five days of intensive coaching at RAD headquarters and two days of Semi-finals; twelve Finalists competed at Sadler’s Wells in the first ever, live streamed Final.

The judging panel chaired by Dame Monica Mason DBE, former Director of The Royal Ballet was David Nixon OBE, Artistic Director of Northern Ballet, and David Bintley CBE, Artistic Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, awarded five medals:

  • Male gold was awarded to Leroy Mokgatle, 15, from South Africa (trained by Christopher Montague, Sayward Harris, Angelique Harris, Heidi Wright & Angela Malan)
  • Female silver medal was awarded to Lania Atkins, 15, from Australia (taught by Mark Reily, Peta Frith, Tamar Arzoumalian & Julie Wells)
  • Female bronze medal was awarded to Makensie Henson, 15, from Australia (Prudence Bowen & Heidi Landford).

Leroy was also presented with The Margot Fonteyn Audience Choice Award. The Choreographic Award for the best Dancer's Own variation went to Jana Baldovino, 15, from New Zealand. Trained by Paula Hunt and Helen Calman. Jana’s winning piece, Fandango, was choreographed by herself and Paula Hunt.

The Genée International Ballet Competition was also shortlisted in the “Best British Cultural & Creative Innovation” category of the Walpole British Luxury Awards 2015.
