The Genée International Ballet Competition will be held in Hong Kong from 3-12 August 2018.
The Genée International Ballet Competition returns to Hong Kong. Officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, this unique city where East meets West is home to a dynamic mix of cultures.
The RAD's association with Hong Kong goes back a long way. The first exams were held there at The Helena May in 1956, with 120 entries. Today, nearly 20,000 candidates enter every year.
The region also has an impressive pedigree when it comes to producing medallists at the Genée, among them:
- Hong Kong-born choreographer, Yuri Ng, won the gold medal in 1983 in London and went on to become Commissioned Choreographer in 2006 when the competition was hosted in Hong Kong for the first time
- In the same year, Ye Feifei, current Principal with the Hong Kong Ballet, was a silver medallist (and Audience Choice Award winner).
- Jinhao Zhang was awarded a silver medal in 2011 in Cape Town, and subsequently went on to win a scholarship at the Prix de Lausanne in 2013, before going on to win English National Ballet's Emerging Dancer competition in 2015.
