Community Christmas celebration

This year, we wanted to celebrate the festive period with our local community, and so on 3 December, we hosted a day of activities that all could enjoy.

We started the day hosting a Christmas-themed DDMIX Dance Festival, led by our president Dame Darcey Bussell. We invited five primary school classes from across the borough to join in an energy-filled workshop based on a wide range of different dance styles with easy-to-follow steps. We were joined by over 80 pupils from Shaftesbury Park Primary School, Falconbrook Primary School, St Anne's CE Primary School, Ark John Archer Primary Academy, and Sacred Heart Battersea.

In the afternoon we invited classes from local secondary schools, Southfields Academy, Burntwood, and Chestnut Grove to join us for a Christmas-themed workshop from our Step Into Dance programme. This supports the development of dance for young people, reaching out to  those who might not otherwise connect with it, and we wanted to bring it to some young people who don’t currently have access to it. The 50 young people enjoyed a hip-hop-based dance class to Christmas classics.

In the evening we hosted an event that was open to all, filling the reception at our headquarters with festive cheer, with music, refreshments, and arts and crafts for the children. We also invited Nicola and Paul Shepheard of Surrey Jive to lead a social dance which attracted people of all ages to the dance floor. We closed the evening by singing along to carols performed by two local choirs from St Peter’s Church and Sound Minds.

We'd like to wish everyone in our community a happy holiday season, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
