In the Spotlight: Andrea Swainson, RADiate Dance Artist

An interview with Andrea Swainson, a RADiate Dance Artist at Red Gates School in Croydon.

What is your dance training and background?

As a child and into my teenage years I trained in Musical Theatre, Ballet, Street and competed at Freestyle Disco competitions.  I then studied at Middlesex University gaining a BA Hons in Dance Studies and discovered my love for contemporary dance, community dance and choreography.

Which RADiate setting/s do you teach at?

I teach at Red Gates School in Croydon, on a Monday all day. Teaching to their various pathways.

What is the best thing about the RADiate project?

To be part of a team of practitioners that share, collaborate and train together.  This is extremely valuable as a freelance dance artist to feel part of a team and be supported by the RAD team. I also love that I have built a strong relationship with the school over the years and value their roles in supporting me within the classroom. At Red Gates school they really value individuality and nurture learning that is empowering to students and enables them to thrive. In the sessions, we are able to see the progress and achievement of all the students, and celebrate those moments together, no matter how big or small they may be.

What new hobby did you start during lockdown?

I started to use my bike more, – my bike was very forgotten about and laid unused for some time. Since lockdown, I have used it much more and I’m enjoying it again.

What is your favourite food or thing to do to relax?

I love yoga and swimming.

A fun fact about you:

I lived in Thailand for 2 years and learnt how to scuba dive. I look forward to getting back in the sea very soon and diving again.
