A practical course in which participating teachers will gain an understanding of the important elements of performance for each of the character dances in RAD Grades 1–3 syllabi. Learning activities will focus on the development of correct technique through the progression of character vocabulary, differences in music and style for each grade, and ways of encouraging learners to develop accuracy in performing rhythmic content and musical phrasing.

Aim

The aim of this course is to boost participants’ confidence in teaching the character work in the RAD Grades 1–3 syllabi through enhancing their knowledge and understanding of technique, style and musicality appropriate to each grade.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the character technique/s for each grade,
  • demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the correct style for each grade, and
  • discuss stylistic, rhythmic and historical features of the character dance music.

Participants will have knowledge and understanding of:

  • approaches to help their learners develop expressive and confident performance of the character dances, and
  • the relationship between elements of technique, style, musicality and overall performance outlined above and the assessment criteria for Examinations, Class Awards, and Solo Performance Awards.

This course will be split across two days:

  • 4 February 9.30am – 12.30pm GMT
  • 5 February 9.30am – 12.45pm GMT

You must attend both sessions. This course will not be recorded.

Please note, on 5 February there is an extra 15 minutes to allow time for questions.

Ruth Henry BA Hons LRAD ARAD RTS

Ruth graduated from the BA (Hons) in Ballet Education degree course, and attained the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Dance (LRAD). She currently works as a freelance ballet teacher in London, UK and the surrounding areas, and tutors on numerous RAD teacher training programmes, including the LRAD. Ruth joined the panel of RAD examiners in December 2021.
