Content
A contemporary dance class rooted in Cunningham technique fused with Hatha yoga. We will begin the class with breath awareness and mindfulness and incorporate this into the dance material that follows. We will gradually build momentum in movement and space in a blend of Cunningham technique exercises and yoga postures from the Hatha yoga style that focuses on alignment and posture. It will offer participants a deeper understanding of contemporary dance movement, as well as alignment and technique from both Cunningham and Hatha philosophies. This class is suitable for those looking to move, work on technique, build strength and flexibility in an encouraging and welcoming space.
Bobby Demers (@audiophiliacuk) will be providing live accompaniment for this course.
Faculty
Jenny Hayes
Jenny has a professional dancing career touring internationally with renowned UK company, Richard Alston Dance, whilst with the company Jenny took daily ballet and Cunningham-based classes, but has also had the pleasure of working with many skilled dance artists, including Chisato Ohno working on a release-based approach to ballet and contemporary movement, and with Just Us Dance Theatre and the Junior Company of the Hamburg Ballet.
As an independent Dance Artist based in London, Jenny currently delivers contemporary and ballet technique classes at world-class dance institutions such as The Place, London Contemporary Dance School and Northern Contemporary Dance School, as well as teaching company classes to New Adventures whilst on tour and at home.
Jenny found joy and calm in a weekly yoga practice during her busy undergraduate degree, 10 years ago at Northern Contemporary Dance School and continued this interest into the early years of her professional performing career. Yoga became a daily practice and supported her professional dancing career and way of life. To deepen her practice Jenny travelled to India to learn more, and studied Hatha and Ashtanga in Rishikesh.
Jenny enjoys sharing her yoga practice with fellow dance artists, yoga rookies and pros, and is looking forward to incorporating these two physical practices into one class so participants can also benefit from these two, much-loved ways of moving, together.
