Guest Lecture Series Event: In Conversation with Gerard Samuel

The second event in our Guest Lecture Series 21-22 features invited speaker Professor Gerard Samuel (University of Cape Town, RSA). In conversation with Dr Kathrina Farrugia-Kriel, Samuel will speak about ballet in South Africa and the rise of black artists in post-apartheid South Africa and in contemporary times. This event will be of interest to those invested in the black ballet histories and South African contemporary ballet.

Dr Gerard M. Samuel is Associate Professor at the Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies, (and Head of Dance) at the University of Cape Town. His Ph.D. research centered on Contemporary Dance in South Africa and the nexus it offers for a reimagining of notions of Other and Body. His phenomenological approach extends to his teaching and creative works. Gerard has produced numerous ballets, and Place of Grace, a dance film in 2011. He is an advocate of disability arts in Cape Town and in Copenhagen.
