Psychological Wellbeing for Dancers (Interactive Webinar)

For those who have been working in the field of dance for some time, you will appreciate how much the issue of mental wellbeing has become an area of concern. Although it is not the remit of a dance teacher to be a doctor or counsellor, it is important that we are aware of mental health issues in order to prevent or manage the escalation of problems linked to mental health. This interactive webinar intends to highlight the causes and symptoms of some key psychological disorders, with discussions surrounding prognosis and treatments.

Aim

The aim of this interactive webinar is to increase the awareness of psychological disorders more commonly experienced by dancers, and offer courses of action for dance teachers.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the interactive webinar, you will:

  • have an understanding of the symptoms of psychological disorders most linked to dancers
  • be aware of some of the conditions that may lead to such disorders
  • be able to consider how to manage issues relating to mental wellbeing within your dance practice

Tutor

Dr Cathy Schofield BA, MSc, PhD

Cathy has been a lecturer in sport and exercise psychology for over twenty years. In addition to this, she works with dance teachers, supporting them in their practice, and works in secondary schools with teenage girls, helping them manage their body image. She is the co-author of the first undergraduate textbook, Psychology for Dancers, linking the world of dance to psychology practice, nominated as dance writer of the year 2019.

She has also enjoyed dancing for forty-five years, in styles including ballet, tap and salsa, as well as dancing in social contexts; specifically funk, jazz and northern soul.
