Psychology for Dancers (London)

By drawing on the experiences of participants, this workshop highlights the importance of psychological theories as applied to dance practice, an area of training and performance which is currently under-utilised.

The workshop will explore how aspects of performance psychology can be used as a tool for dancers and teachers alike. Participants will be introduced to concepts and theories which they can use in the performance, learning and teaching of dance to improve teaching practices, and enable dancers and students of dance to fulfil their potential.

Using a range of psychological theories, the workshop will show how a dancer’s self-esteem and wellbeing can be enhanced, and emotions managed. The workshop will also show how an understanding of implementing some of the principles of social and cognitive psychology can bring students together, enhance communication and group cohesion, enhance performance potential and support a productive work ethos.


The aim of this workshop is to:

  • Increase awareness of the benefits of implementing performance psychology theories in maximising the potential of dance students and professional dancers.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the workshop you will:

  • have an understanding of issues related to dancers’ self-perception
  • have an understanding of emotions linked to dance practice
  • have an understanding of how selected psychological theories can enhance dance skill development
  • have an understanding of group dynamics
  • have an understanding of the impact of motivation
