Syllabus Strategies: Focus on Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate CPD Course (Cambridge, UK)

A one-day practical course in which participating teachers will gain an understanding of how to teach the Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate syllabi. Learning activities will focus on creating appropriate development exercises to encourage an accurate interpretation of the criteria used in the mark scheme of the examination.

Aims

This course is designed to:

  • Look in depth at the philosophy of the work,
  • Offer a chance to improve understanding of specific areas within the syllabi, particularly in regards to technical, musical and performance aspects of the work, as identified by examiners during examinations,
  • Reflect on the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and variations,
  • Provide a platform to discuss, explore and develop strategies to strengthen areas of the work,
  • Support the creation of development exercises for Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate students by defining the requisite skills and knowledge to do so, and
  • Participants at the course will be better able to understand the ‘how’ of teaching the syllabi, increase knowledge of the assessment criteria and gain insight into how the candidates are generally coping in the examinations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the activity, you will:

  • Be able to demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the technique/s at each level,
  • Be able to discuss the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and variations, and
  • Have knowledge and understanding of approaches to help your learners develop the necessary strength and understanding to achieve the requirements of the assessment criteria in the examination.

Please be aware that the course will take place in a studio on the first floor of the building.

Recommended Preparation

Participants should have knowledge of the exercises and variations of the RAD Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate syllabi.

Tutor

Lesley Cox FIDTA AISTD RAD RTS

After many years of freelance teaching and choreographic work, Lesley started her own dance school in 2000. She is also co-creator of a youth dance company, which has staged many successful productions of ballet classics and other creative works.

Experienced in teaching all ages, Lesley has run teacher training courses within her school and, in recent years, has worked increasingly with adult dancers of all abilities from beginners to professional performers.

Lesley is an RAD examiner and CPD tutor for graded and vocational levels and travels extensively in these roles.
