Faculty of Education staff book launch

Dr Kathrina Farrugia-Kriel, Head of Research in the Faculty of Education, has recently published a monograph, Princess Poutiatine and the Art of Ballet in Malta.

With a publisher’s launch at the iconic Manoel Theatre, the same venue were Poutiatine presented her students in her last concert in May 1978, the book offers new insights into Poutiatine’s narratives: as a post-revolution Russian émigré, as a student of Lubov Egorova in Paris in the 1920s, her interest in the Ballets Russes and Anna Pavlova repertoire, as well as the golden era of ballet in colonial Malta in the 1930s.

The book makes further connections between the war effort, and the ballet boom of the 1950s, through to the dawn of a new chapter in Malta’s independence and republican histories. Dr Farrugia-Kriel gave a public lecture at the regal Casino Maltese back in February.
