The Boys Dance 20 and Challenge

The Boys Dance 20 and Challenge in Adelaide, Australia, were a big success, with 40 workshop participants and 18 taking part in the competition between 3 & 4 January.

We were also very fortunate to be able to welcome Wade Neilsen (RAD-trained and currently playing Billy Elliot in Adelaide) to meet the students. Wade was coached for the role by Jake Burden, part of the Boys Dance 20 faculty and founder of Ballet Brothers.

Lunch party in Seoul

On 9 January, our colleagues in Korea held a centenary lunch celebration for 50 people at the Sheraton Seoul Palace Gangnam Hotel.

Notable guests included: Jaehong Park (President of Korea Ballet Association), Donggon Kim (Vice Presedent of Korea Ballet Association), Yunra Cho (Professor of Chungnam University), Geungsoo Kim (Professor of Jungang University), and Samuel Wiggington (Marketing manager of Dulwich college Seoul).

Centenary celebration at the British High Commission

RAD New Zealand celebrated the beginning of the centenary launch in style with a garden party hosted at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Wellington on 12 January.

Teachers, members and students enjoyed mixing and mingling with old and new friends, and Artistic Director, Gerard Charles, with Ruth Dix, Political Counsellor for the High Commission, got to cut a centenary cake made by Deirdre Tarrant RAD RTS.

Centenary summer school

The RAD Centenary Summer School in NZ was a huge success, with over 150 dance students and 45 teachers involved in the two-week programme.

The summer school featured a range of dance styles with both technique classes and creative/choreographic workshops. Lisa-Maree Cullum tutored alongside former Royal New Zealand Ballet principal, Abigail Boyle, Mitchell Rayner (former principal of The Australian Ballet) and Tim Barnes and Scott Pokorny (directors of Scimm Dance Company, Melbourne).

Centenary celebration in the USA

On 17 January RAD USA hosted a centenary celebration reception at California State University, Long Beach.

Teachers from across the country attended the reception which was held in conjunction with the USA Dance Challenge 2020. In addition to the competition, CPD workshops were offered, including 'Inside the Exam', and 'Pain in the Dancer: What do Dance Educators Need to Know?'
