Launching Zoom in on The Fonteyn

We are pleased to announce that on Tuesday, 14 July, we will be launching Zoom in on The Fonteyn, an insightful series of online interviews and reflections held over Zoom, on what makes The Fonteyn a unique competition. The 9-week series is aimed at future candidates for The Fonteyn, RAD teachers, members and the wider dance community.

Over the 9-week series, we will hear from international dance professionals like Dame Darcey Bussell DBE, Sir Anthony Dowell, Stella Abrera, Marianela Nunez, Dame Monica Mason DBE, Wayne Sleep OBE, and many more as they discuss Margot Fonteyn, the person and the performer, dancing Frederick Ashton’s choreography and tips and tricks for preparing your own performances.

When we cancelled the Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition 2020 (formerly Genée), at the Royal Opera House, due to Covid-19, we were aware that many teachers and candidates had already dedicated time in the studio preparing for the competition. Therefore as part of this series, we are inviting students who were planning to enter The Fonteyn 2020 to submit a video of yourselves, performing what would have been your chosen Classical Variation.

We cannot replace the experience of the competition but we can connect you online with your fellow would-be candidates. All performances will be viewable by RAD Artistic Director, Gerard Charles and each other. However, the videos will not be publicly available – it will be your online stage, exclusively.

There is no fee to take part and it is not a competition; it is simply an opportunity to celebrate your hard work and that of your teachers’ in supporting you so far. Videos can be submitted from Monday 3 August until Sunday 13 September 2020 at 17:00 BST. Full details on Your Online Stage will be available when the series launches next week.
