Top tip

Be aware of what is behind the dancer(s) that you are photographing.  It’s all very well capturing a great moment, but if the background is cluttered or messy it will detract from that moment when viewed as an image, so your background is as important as your foreground (but is often overlooked…)

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Usually the best advice comes from the dancers themselves, so if I offer up any direction or suggestions to the dancers, I always listen to their feedback and try to adapt what I’m doing to suit them.

What’s your favourite dance image you have taken and why?

Being asked to choose a favourite image is a bit like being asked which of your children you prefer, but I’m going to choose an image that I made for Rambert, not because it’s my favourite, but because it’s always difficult to get a group jump shot to work because of the timing for the dancers, and this one worked perfectly with the first shot. The piece is ‘Sub’ by Itzik Galili.
