2018 and beyond at the RAD

2018 and beyond at the RAD
The Royal Academy of Dance yesterday previewed its plans for 2018 and beyond at '18+', a new year’s drinks event hosted in partnership with the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park.

Invited guests  heard about a range of plans that set the RAD firmly on course towards 2020, when celebrations of the charity’s 100th birthday will culminate in relocation to brand new headquarters in the London Borough of Wandsworth.

Plans announced last night  include:

  • The global launch of Discovering Repertoire, an innovative new concept in training and assessment based around well-known classical ballet repertoire. This means that students can learn choreography that they have seen on the stage, set to music that they know and love.
  • The expansion of the popular Silver Swans initiative that equips dance teachers with the skills to deliver dance lessons to older adults. Following phase I of the pilot, which launched in September 2017 in the UK and the US, phase II will see an increase in the number of teaching places available in the UK and the US, and the introduction of the initiative to Australia.
  • The staging in August 2018 of the Genée International Ballet Competition in Hong Kong in partnership with Hong Kong Ballet, with Toronto set to host the competition in 2019, before it returns to London in 2020 to coincide with the RAD’s centenary celebrations.
  • Details about the next phase of Project B, including the availability of new bursaries for male applicants to the RAD's GCSE and A level programmes, and a new collaboration with Dance School of the Year to recognise best practice in the teaching of dance to boys via a new Project B Award for Innovation in Male Dance.
  • New partnerships to build capacity in the dance teaching profession, including: a pathway to RAD teaching membership for students at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; a collaboration with Dancers’ Career Development (DCD) to support professional dancers approaching retirement to gain practical experience of a dance teaching career; and a partnership with US-based Dance Teacher Web Live to provide easy access to RAD CPD in the USA.
  • The trial of MOLONers in Motion, a new collaboration between the RAD and the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, which uses dance tuition to support both the wellbeing and presentation skills of staff.
  • Construction on the RAD’s new global headquarters will continue in 2018. The new building will substantially increase the RAD’s footprint in the London Borough of Wandsworth, uniting all teams under one roof. It will also provide state-of-the-art studio and performance facilities that vastly enhance the RAD's reach into the local community.

I'm afraid your map on which to find classes is too crowded in the SE area. Can you please advise me if there is a class available now, in SW London/Richmond areas???

Still looking for a Silver Swans class in the Newbury/Reading area. Is it possible to let me know whether one is likely to start some time this year?

Dear Susan,

We have teachers being added to the map all the time. Unfortunately, we do not know until the teacher decides to add their classes to the map, where and when these are going to be happening. Please check this page at regular intervals[…]/become-a-silver-swan
