Music for Dance and Dance Teaching – Progressions Online CPD Course

Participants in this online course will undertake a series of online activities in order to gain highly developed practical and theoretical knowledge of musical forms and terminology in relation to dance and dance teaching.

To successfully complete this course, it is required that you submit at least one forum post, of no less than 300 words, before 5pm BST on 19 April 2023. For each unit of work, we will provide questions for you to consider and to help inform your forum post.

Aim

The aim of this course is to introduce participants to musical forms and applicable terminology, outlined in terms of a set of principles that may be used in relation to dance teaching.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course participants will have:

  • acquired a highly developed understanding of musical terms and forms, and
  • acquired an ability to plan for the inclusion of musical understanding in their own teaching context.

You will access the course via Moodle (our Virtual Learning Environment). You will receive login details and further information shortly before the course start date.

Dates

The course runs from 28 March – 26 April 2023.

All of the course materials are available within this period, and you can make your way through the resources at your own pace. You do not need to be logged in at a specific time, however, you will need to submit your 300 word forum post by 5pm BST on 19 April 2023.

Tutor

Nicola Trotter ARAD ADPA (Dance) BHMS RAD Teaching Diploma RAD RTS RAD Mentor – CBTS

Nicola completed the RAD examination syllabus to Solo Seal level in Australia and was awarded the title of Associate (ARAD) at eighteen. Continuing her training, she obtained a Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance), specialising in Choreography and Pedagogy.

At the University of Queensland, she completed a degree in Human Movement Studies, majoring in Anatomy, Child Growth and Development, and Dance Aesthetics. On completion, she was invited back to become a lecturer and practical tutor in Laban Analysis and Educational Dance and became involved in teaching and designing dance music programmes for children with Downs Syndrome and other special needs.

As co-director of Brisbane Dance Centre, she helped to set up a full-time vocational dance course, including subjects such as Dance History, Body Mechanics, and Anatomy for the Dancer.

A move to Dubai in 1990, saw Nicola establish DanceHorizons, where she has nurtured many students from their first steps to advanced level. Many past students have continued to study dance around the world or moved into associated fields.

Nicola was the recipient of ‘Outstanding Teacher Mentor’ at the 2020 RAD Centenary Dance Teacher Awards and is an RAD Life Registered Teacher.
