Teaching Beyond the Basics: Advanced Pointe Technique – Upland

This one-day practical workshop is designed to increase a ballet teacher’s confidence and knowledge of teaching pointe work to students at advanced levels of training. Participants will be introduced to, and will explore through discussion, the vocabulary of pointe work from RAD Advanced Foundation through Advanced 2 levels of training. Examples of training exercises to prepare students for the more rigorous demands of pointe work, as well as strategies for implementing training exercises into their classes, will be explored.

Aims

The aims of this activity are to:

• Improve the participants’ knowledge and understanding of the RAD Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 examination syllabus pointe work with a particular focus on how to prepare and train the work across different stages of training and proficiency, and
• Share and discuss ideas on creating and teaching training exercises and pointe work enchaînements

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the activity, you will:

• Have knowledge and understanding of the needs of different students when teaching pointe work for the Advanced levels,
• Have developed different approaches and strategies for teaching Advanced pointe work, and
• Have knowledge of the vocabulary for the Advanced syllabus levels.

Course Tutor

Sarah Haslock is a graduate of the College of the Royal Academy Dance and serves as an RAD Examiner and CPD Tutor. Sarah is the former director of the Royal Dance Academy in Atlanta, GA and also holds certifications in Rambert Contemporary Grades, Progressing Ballet Technique, and is a Silver Swans Tutor.

Recommended Preparation

Working knowledge of Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 examination syllabus Pointe exercises.

It is recommended that participants have the Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 syllabus books to refer to during the workshop.
