Session Descriptions
Training Male Dancers
This practical session is designed to support teachers in developing a deeper understanding of the specific needs of male dancers in classical ballet training.
Led by RAD Examiner Darren Parish, the session will explore key aspects of male training, including strength development, allegro, turns, elevation, and coordination.
Darren Parish brings extensive international experience as a performer, teacher, Ballet Master, and notator. His career has included work with major ballet companies and vocational schools around the world.
Teaching Pas de Deux
Led by RAD Examiner Darren Parish, this teacher-focused session explores key principles in the teaching of pas de deux, including communication, coordination, timing, musicality, weight placement, and trust between dancers.
Teachers will learn how to introduce and develop partnering work safely and progressively. Drawing on Darren’s extensive international experience as a performer, teacher, Ballet Master, and notator, the session will offer practical insight into supporting dancers as they develop secure and expressive partnering skills.
Enhancing Allegro Performance
Strong, powerful, and efficient allegro requires more than technical training alone. Research in dance science and athletic performance has demonstrated that appropriately prescribed strength and plyometric training can significantly enhance jump height, power production, landing mechanics, and injury resilience in dancers.
In this practical workshop, Dinah Hampson will introduce evidence-based exercises and plyometric progressions that dance teachers can safely incorporate into their classes and training programs to improve allegro performance. Participants will explore how dancers develop force, absorb impact, and transfer strength into dynamic jumping movements while maintaining the artistry and aesthetics required in dance.
The session will also address the unique physiological and training considerations of male and female dancers, highlighting how training strategies can be adapted to optimize performance, support healthy development, and reduce injury risk across different stages of training.
Teachers will leave with practical exercises, progressions, and coaching strategies that can be immediately implemented in the studio to help dancers jump higher, move more efficiently, and perform with greater confidence.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the role of strength and plyometric training in developing allegro performance.
- Identify key physical qualities that contribute to successful jumping and landing in dancers.
- Apply progressive plyometric exercises appropriate for different ages and training levels.
- Recognize common movement deficits that may limit allegro performance or increase injury risk.
- Differentiate important training considerations for male and female dancers.
- Incorporate evidence-based exercises and progressions into regular dance classes and conditioning programs.
- Develop practical strategies to improve power, coordination, jump height, and landing control in dance students.
Intended Audience
Dance teachers, rehearsal directors, studio owners, dance educators, and dance health professionals interested in enhancing allegro performance and supporting the long-term athletic development of dancers.
Advanced Level Pointe Work
Elevate your approach to teaching advanced pointe work in this practical master class designed for teachers, with advanced students participating as demonstrators. The session will explore how teachers can safely and effectively prepare dancers for the technical and artistic demands of advanced pointe work.
Led by RAD Examiner and Faculty Lead at GOH Ballet Bayview, Paola Haro, this session will explore how teachers can safely and effectively prepare dancers for the technical and artistic demands of advanced pointe vocabulary. With students participating in the class, teachers will have the opportunity to observe concepts, corrections, and adaptations in real time.
- Assessing Readiness: Understand how to evaluate a dancer’s strength, control, alignment, and technical preparedness for advanced pointe work.
- Progressive Training: Explore progressions for turns, balances, jumps, and more complex pointe vocabulary.
- Strength and Control: Develop strategies for building strength, core support, coordination, and control at the advanced level.
- Identify Common Faults: Learn how to address them safely and effectively.
