Perfectionism in Dance contains 8 chapters grouped together into three thematic blocks of learning. Designed to improve your ability to recognise and work with perfectionism in the dance context, you will be guided through materials that are aimed at fostering a greater understanding of your own dance practice whether that of a dancer, teacher or director.

Session 2 – How perfectionism is learnt and reinforced in dance

What caused you to become a perfectionist and what keeps your perfectionism going.

Aims:

  • Develop an understanding of how perfectionistic behaviour develops
  • Recognise the factors that can reduce or exacerbate perfectionistic tendencies
  • Understand how perfectionism is reinforced through rules, assumptions and standards
  • Make clear distinctions between the three dimensions of perfectionism

Learning Outcomes

  • Define the learning and temperament factors in the development of perfectionism
  • Elucidate perfectionism that is orientated towards self or others or is socially prescribed
