A practical course spit over two sessions in which participating teachers will gain an understanding of how to teach the Grade 6, 7 and 8 syllabi, focusing on the female work. Learning activities will focus on creating appropriate development exercises to encourage an accurate interpretation of the criteria used in the mark scheme of the examination. This course does not cover the classical dances or character in detail.

Aims:

  • To boost participants’ confidence in teaching the RAD’S Grades 6-8 syllabus through enhancing their knowledge and understanding of the criteria used in the mark scheme of the examinations,
  • Look in depth at the philosophy of Grades 6, 7 and 8,
  • Offer a chance to improve understanding of specific areas within the syllabus, particularly in regard to technical, musical and performance aspects of the work, as identified by examiners during examinations,
  • Reflect on the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and dances,
  • Provide a platform to discuss, explore and develop strategies to strengthen areas of the work, and
  • Support the creation of development exercises for students by defining the requisite skills and knowledge to do so.

Learning Outcomes

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the technique/s at each level,
  • discuss the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and dances, and
  • help their learners develop the necessary strength and understanding to achieve the requirements of the assessment criteria in the examination.

Recommended Preparation

Participants should be familiar with the content and methodology of Grades 6-8 Female.

Tutor

Lindsay Ellman-Brown

Lindsay was born and raised in Zimbabwe and then moved to London in 1985 and trained at the College of the Royal Academy of Dance in London. Returning home to dance with the National Ballet of Zimbabwe, she also choreographed and produced full-length ballets for the company. Lindsay ran her own ballet school with over 250 students for 10 years in Zimbabwe before immigrating to Australia. She holds a Diploma and Licentiate from the RAD, as well as a master’s degree in Dance Teaching from QUT. Becoming an RAD Examiner in 1999, Lindsay travels extensively both nationally and internationally, examining and teaching.
