A live stream course in which participating teachers will gain an understanding of how to teach the Pre-Primary and Primary in Dance syllabi. Learning activities will focus on creating appropriate development exercises to encourage an accurate interpretation of the criteria used in the mark scheme of the examination.
Aims
The Syllabus Strategies course is designed to:
- Look in depth at the philosophy of the work,
- Offer a chance to improve understanding of specific areas within the syllabus, particularly in regards to technical, musical and performance aspects of the work, as identified by examiners during examinations,
- Reflect on the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and dances,
- Provide a platform to discuss, explore and develop strategies to strengthen areas of the work, and
- Support the creation of development exercises for Pre-Primary and Primary students by defining the requisite skills and knowledge to do so.
Attendees at the course will be better able to understand the ‘how’ of teaching the syllabus, increase knowledge of the assessment criteria and gain insight into how the candidates are generally coping in the examinations. the assessment criteria and gain insight into how the candidates are generally coping in the examinations.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will:
- Be able to demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the technique/s at each level,
- Be able to discuss the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and dances, and
- Have knowledge and understanding of approaches to help their learners develop the necessary strength and understanding to achieve the requirements of the assessment criteria in the examination.
Dates and Times
This course will be split across two days:
- 16 September, 9.30am – 12.30pm BST
- 17 September, 9.30am – 12.30pm BST
You must attend both sessions. This course will not be recorded.

This activity will be hosted on Zoom. You will be sent details of how to join the activity within five working days prior to the start date.

You will require the following resources:
- A computer/laptop/tablet with internet connection, a camera, microphone and speakers
This is a practical course, please ensure you have space to move and have your camera turned on to actively participate.
Tutor
Ruth Henry BA Hons LRAD ARAD RTS
Ruth graduated from the BA (Hons) in Ballet Education degree course, and attained the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Dance (LRAD). She currently works as a freelance ballet teacher in London, UK and the surrounding areas, and tutors on numerous RAD teacher training programmes, including the LRAD. Ruth joined the panel of RAD examiners in December 2021.
