Joan Burnett OAM Scholarship 2026

The Royal Academy of Dance is pleased to present the 21st Joan Burnett OAM Scholarship.

Open to eligible Tasmanian RAD students from Intermediate Foundation through to Solo Seal, the Scholarship gives dancers the opportunity to perform on stage, build confidence and gain valuable performance experience. Students take part in a syllabus class, with selected finalists invited to perform a syllabus dance before a winner and runner-up are chosen for each Vocational level. An overall winner will receive the Joan Burnett OAM Scholarship.

The Scholarship honours Joan Burnett OAM, who played a significant role in the development of classical ballet and the Royal Academy of Dance in northern Tasmania. After an accomplished performing career in the UK, Joan established the Joan Burnett School of Ballet in Launceston in 1946 and dedicated more than 40 years to dance teaching and stage production in Tasmania.

The 2026 Scholarship will be adjudicated by Todd Sutherland, an accomplished dancer, teacher and choreographer with experience across The Australian Ballet, Queensland Ballet and Sydney Dance Company.
