Eileen Hogarth

Eileen Hogarth began her career in ‘physical culture’ – at Noel Hubble’s Central College – a then well known fitness studio, where years later she became Chief of Staff.

She studied ballet with Constance Edwards and Mena Bauer and later with Walter Desborough and at Jennie Brennan’s Studio of Ballet in Melbourne. In 1931 she formed her own club and created the respected name ‘Thargoh’. In 1955 she was
appointed Local Organiser of the RAD, then in 1958 opened her own ballet school. Eileen was awarded an Associate of the RAD Advanced Teacher’s Diploma and in 1962 became co-jointly both Organiser and Secretary of the RAD State Committee and in the following year the first RAD examiner in South Australia.

Many of her pupils achieved great success in their chosen dance careers. Eileen Hogarth – “Hoges” as she was affectionately known – had an abiding love and interest in what became her life’s work – fostering the talents of the young. Her death in 1975 marked an end of an era of influence and endeavour.
