Delve into the science and theory behind compassionate approaches in dance education, including evolutionary perspectives and recent research.
This session invites you to reflect on your own compassionate voice and introduces practical strategies for fostering a compassionate mindset in students – promoting resilience, empathy, and wellbeing in the studio environment.
This webinar will delve deeper into the topic introduced in the Member Event on 21 January.
Aims
The aims of this webinar are to:
- Explore the power of compassion, including the associated science and research, whilst using videos and interactive exercises to bring the topic alive, and
- Gain practical ideas and tips as to how to promote compassion within your dance studio.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the webinar, you will:
- Have a greater understanding of the benefits of compassion for your studio,
- Have gained knowledge as to what a compassionate approach looks like in practice,
- Learn strategies that you can incorporate into your lessons to help students develop their own inner compassionate mind, and
- Consider how compassion can help you during difficult teaching moments.

Tutor
Dr Katherine Hodson
Katherine qualified as a Child & Adolescent Clinical Psychologist in November 2005 from the University of Oxford, and worked within the NHS for seven years before moving into private practice from 2013. Katherine utilises a number of different therapeutic models in her practice, including: CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), CFT (Compassion Focused Therapy), ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy), and Systemic approaches (including Narrative Therapy).
Katherine has undertaken a variety of training since qualification, including completing a Diploma in Advanced Practitioner Skills in Eating Disorders; and being trained in the Multi-dimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) programme in Oregon, USA. Katherine has additionally undertaken advanced training in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and is the co-author of The Compassionate Parenting Workbook, which was published in 2025.
She has a special interest in working with the mental health needs of children and teenagers (often with neurodiversity), treating difficulties such as: anxiety, depression, anger, and eating disorders. Katherine is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
