Takero Shimazaki Architects with Atomik Architecture were recently given a 2024 RIBA London Award for designing the RAD’s headquarters in Battersea, London.
Since opening, the building has become a centre for community events and performances and provides state-of-the-art facilities for the RAD dance school, students, and staff. It includes seven studios, the Aud Jebsen Studio Theatre, the Wolfson Library, and an archive housing and a collection of over 75,000 dance and RAD-related objects.
The building is also home to the RAD shop, and a café offering somewhere to meet before or after a class.
The RIBA Journal announced the award: “Jury members were unanimous in recognising the quality of the design and the trusting and collaborative client/architect relationship, as well as the exemplary way that the project serves its community while also transforming this important worldwide institution.”
