Visiting the Library & Archive
Visiting the Library and Archive is free of charge for Royal Academy of Dance Members, RAD Staff, RAD Faculty of Education students, and Benesh Members. All other visitors will need to purchase a Reader’s Ticket.
We look forward to your visit but we just ask that you make an appointment, which we will confirm, before you visit as we may not be able to accommodate requests with less than 48 hours notice. Several Reader’s Ticket options are available (see below). Borrowing from the Library. A Borrower Membership is available exclusively to Royal Academy of Dance Members, and Benesh Members. Borrowing Rights allow the loan of up to 3 items at a time from circulating stock (certain restrictions apply). To become a Royal Academy of Dance Member, follow the link below. Confirmation of membership will be received within 48 hours Monday–Friday. For a Library Borrower Membership Application Form, please contact us. You will need your Royal Academy of Dance or Benesh Membership number when applying.

Archive Materials and Images
For the purposes of individual research or private study, it may be possible for library staff to scan and email extracts of copyright material according to the same limitations outlined under photocopying. The supply of images from the GBL Wilson Collection is managed by Arenapal. If you require an image that is not yet available on their website then please contact the library for further advice.
The supply of digital image files from the library’s other photographic collections is limited to personal use or private educational purposes only. Requests for images must be accompanied by the relevant application form. Fees are applicable.

We are here to help you with your research.
Research and Enquiries
If you are unable to visit the library, we may be able to undertake research on your behalf. This service includes help and advice for general reference or information enquiries, literature searches, photocopying and forwarding copies of journal articles or other printed material, in accordance with copyright regulations.
Brief reference or stock enquiries are free. More extensive research (exceeding 30 minutes) will be charged for at the following rates (prices include VAT):
- Students £10.00 per hour
- Private researchers £15.00 per hour
- Commercial Users £30.00 per hour
General reference and information enquiries
If you have a specific enquiry or need information to assist with your research, we can search our extensive resources to try and find the answer for you.
Literature searches
Depending on your subject area we may be able to use our printed reference and online sources to provide you with a list of texts or articles relevant to your topic. We can also advise when material in the archives and special collections may be appropriate to your needs.
Local history enquiries
If your enquiry is in connection with the activities of a local dance school or teacher, you may be best contacting your local library or newspaper archives in the first instance.
Photocopying and Scanning
Self-service photocopying and scanning facilities are available on-site and a scanning service is offered for those who are unable to visit us.
Self-Service Photocopying
To use the photocopier you will need to purchase credits from library staff. The following prices [table 003] will apply . Visitors may photocopy, scan or take digital photos of some material: these services incur a fee, paid for during your visit, and copyright law must be adhered to at all times. If you require copies of material from the archive, please be aware that requests for copies of archival materials are charged on a case-by-case basis, and not all of the collections are able to be copied.
Photocopying for Commercial Purposes
If you are copying for commercial purposes then you will need to purchase a license from the Licence Scheme for Public Libraries, which can be purchased from library staff for a fee of £38 plus VAT. Scanning Service
For users who are unable to visit the library in person, photocopying for the purposes of research and private study can usually be carried out by library staff on behalf of individuals, subject to the following conditions:
The applicant must sign a Copyright Declaration form confirming that:
- the copy provided will not be used by anyone other than the applicant, for any purpose other than research or private study;
- he or she has not previously been supplied with a copy of the same material by this or any other library; and
- to the best of the applicant’s knowledge, the same material is not required at roughly the same time by any other person, for substantially the same purpose. Requests for the same material by more than one individual will be refused.
The applicant must pay a fee to cover the cost of producing the copy.
Copyright
Copyright law must be adhered to at all times. For the purposes of research and private study, individuals are permitted to make single copies of copyright material not exceeding:
- one single chapter from a book, or one article from a single journal issue or set of conference proceedings, or 5% of a given work, 10 pages in the case of a single poem or short story from a collection.
Research Service
A Librarian or Archivist will carry out a literature search or identify material in the archives relating to your topic of interest. This is charged as follows:
