A practical course in which participating teachers will focus on the five classical dances within the RAD Grade 5 syllabus.
Aim
The aims of this course are:
- To provide a focus on the five classical dances within the Grade 5 syllabus and equip teachers with a secure base from which they can expand and develop their knowledge in relation to the dance syllabus content,
- To exemplify the required movements as notated in the publication, The Foundations of Classical Ballet Technique,
- To provide ideas on methodology and development of the choreography found in the dances,
- To provide an opportunity for participants to understand the mark scheme and how these apply to the preparation of students for assessment: Examinations, Class Awards and Solo Performance Awards, and
- To enable participants to experience movements appropriate for the development of the technique, artistry and musicality required for the dances.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the activity, participants will:
- Be able to demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the technique and movement quality in each of the dances,
- Be able to demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the performance elements for each of the dances ,
- Have knowledge and understanding of the appropriate build-ups and development exercises relating to the dances to support the development of the technique artistry and music appreciation, and
- Have knowledge and understanding of the criteria relating to the dances within Examinations, Class Awards and Solo Performance Awards.

This course will be split across two days, you must attend both sessions.

This is a practical course, please ensure you have space to move in order to actively participate.
Recommended Preparation
Participants should have a working knowledge of the RAD Grade 5 syllabus, including the dances, and knowledge and understanding of the Specifications relating to Grade 5.
Tutor
Ruth Henry BA Hons LRAD ARAD RTS
Ruth graduated from the BA (Hons) in Ballet Education degree course, and attained the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Dance (LRAD). She currently works as a freelance ballet teacher in London, UK and the surrounding areas, and tutors on numerous RAD teacher training programmes, including the LRAD. Ruth joined the panel of RAD examiners in December 2021.
