Contact:

A one-day practical course in which participating teachers gain an understanding of the character content from Grades 4 and 5. Teachers will be provided with information to support the learning and performance of the three character dances from each Grade. The examination criteria will be considered in relation to the necessary technical, artistic and musical aspects of the work.

Aims:

The aims of this course are to:

  • support teachers in developing their knowledge and understanding of the different styles and qualities necessary to establish the identifying character movements from each country, and
  • provide appropriate development exercises to enhance the students’ learning and performance of the necessary technique, musical appreciation and artistry required for Examinations, Class Awards and Solo Performance Awards.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will:

  • be able to demonstrate and understand the character technique required at each level,
  • be able to demonstrate the different styles and qualities of movement required at each level,
  • understand the various rhythms and styles from the relevant countries associated with each Grade,
  • have an understanding of suitable strategies to help motivate students to enjoy expressive movement relating to the atmosphere of the music,
  • have knowledge and understanding of the appropriate build-ups and development exercises relating to all character dances to support the development of the technique artistry and music appreciation, and
  • have knowledge and understanding of the criteria relating to the character work within Examinations, Class Awards and Solo Performance Awards.

Format

In-person practical course – includes practical exercises and group activities in the studio with your tutor and fellow teachers.

Recommended Preparation

  • Participants should be familiar with the content and methodology of Grades 4 and 5 RAD syllabi

Julie trained vocationally at The Dance School of Scotland and graduated from the Royal Ballet School Teachers’ Training Course. She has had a diverse career – performing, choreographing, teaching and creating resources for study in dance. She has 35 years’ experience in dance, dance training and education.

An Alumni of The Royal Ballet School, she is a Tutor for their Affiliate Training and Assessment Program internationally.

Selected by the RAD Creative Panel as an original Tutor of the new RAD syllabus, she conducts CPD courses for teachers throughout Australasia.

For the RAD Faculty of Education, she has 17 years’ experience in dance teacher training from certificate to post graduate level.

She piloted and guest lectured the elected RAD Access Route at Queensland University of Technology since its inception, for dance degree students within the Creative Industries.

Julie is regularly invited on Faculty for exam intensive workshops and summer schools working with dance students at recreational and vocational levels.

As an Adjudicator, Julie has judged national RAD awards and competitions.

She works at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, in her home city of Melbourne.
