Contact:

A one-day practical introductory course focusing on the set exercises of the RAD Grade 1 syllabus and, where appropriate, discussing appropriate teaching points, strategies and methodology. Participants will be provided with syllabus detail for the set exercises, with brief references to the examination marking criteria and running of the exam day.

Please note, the classical and character dances will not be covered in detail in this course.

Aims:

The aims of this course are to:

  • learn the set exercises in the RAD Grade 1 syllabus through explanation and physical participation,
  • improve participants’ understanding of syllabus expectations,
  • ensure accuracy of the settings,
  • reflect on appropriate teaching methodology relating to the set exercises, and
  • improve understanding of the logistical running of the exam and mark scheme, in relation to the set exercises.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, you will:

  • have an understanding and knowledge of the set exercises of the RAD Grade 1 syllabus,
  • have an understanding of the required technique for the set work,
  • be able to recall settings with accuracy,
  • be able to reflect on the most effective teaching methodologies when teaching the set work, and
  • have increased understanding of the expectations regarding the running of the exam with reference to uniform and format, as well as knowledge of the mark scheme.

Julie Fleming

Dip RBS TTC, ARAD, AISTD

Julie trained vocationally at The Dance School of Scotland and graduated from the Royal Ballet School Teachers’ Training Course. She has had a diverse career – performing, choreographing, teaching and creating resources for study in dance. She has 35 years’ experience in dance, dance training and education.

An Alumni of The Royal Ballet School, she is a Tutor for their Affiliate Training and Assessment Program internationally.

Selected by the RAD Creative Panel as an original Tutor of the new RAD syllabus, she conducts CPD courses for teachers throughout Australasia.

For the RAD Faculty of Education, she has 17 years’ experience in dance teacher training from certificate to post graduate level.

She piloted and guest lectured the elected RAD Access Route at Queensland University of Technology since its inception, for dance degree students within the Creative Industries.

Julie is regularly invited on Faculty for exam intensive workshops and summer schools working with dance students at recreational and vocational levels.

As an Adjudicator, Julie has judged national RAD awards and competitions.

She works at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, in her home city of Melbourne.
