Perfectionism in Dance includes 8 chapters, grouped into three thematic learning blocks. Designed to build your ability to recognise and work with perfectionism in a dance context, the course guides you through materials that foster a deeper understanding of your own dance practice, whether you are a dancer, teacher, or director.

Attend all three online sessions or book individual sessions.

Session 1 – Introduction to perfectionism in dance – 19 March

Striving for your ideal or sabotaging your dreams. How perfectionism can be a friend and a foe.

  • Understanding of perfectionistic thinking and behaving
  • Distinguish between positive and negative perfectionism
  • Look at positive and negative perfectionistic thinking styles, feelings, and behaviours
  • Consider the impact of negative perfectionism
  • Define perfectionism
  • Realise the costs and benefits of being perfectionistic
  • Elucidate the different impact of negative and positive perfectionism
  • Consider how perfectionism functions in your own practice

Session 2 – How perfectionism is learnt and reinforced in dance – 26 March

What caused you to become a perfectionist and what keeps your perfectionism going.

  • Develop an understanding of how perfectionistic behaviour develops
  • Recognise the factors that can reduce or exacerbate perfectionistic tendencies
  • Understand how perfectionism is reinforced through rules, assumptions and standards
  • Make clear distinctions between the three dimensions of perfectionism
  • Define the learning and temperament factors in the development of perfectionism
  • Elucidate perfectionism that is orientated towards self or others or is socially prescribed
  • Recognise how perfectionism develops over time
  • Consider how perfectionism functions in your own practice.

Session 3 – Creating best practice for dancers working with perfectionism – 2 April

How to put the theory into practice and strive for excellence in the studio.

  • Develop an understanding of how to manage perfectionism through your studio practice and / or teaching
  • Develop an understanding of how to manage perfectionism through the environment you create
  • Practiced psychological skills you can bring into the studio
  • Consider how perfectionism functions in your own practice

Includes a presentation, discussion and a question-and-answer session.

Recommended preparation

None required.

Sessions can be attended individually. There is no requirement or disadvantage to attending only one to two of the three sessions.

Dr Shona Erskine is a psychologist specialising in performance psychology for dancers and a former professional dancer herself. With a background that spans performance, teaching, and research, she brings a unique perspective on how psychology can support sustainable, values-based practice in the studio. Shona has taught across leading institutions, worked with dance companies and independent artists.
