This half-day interactive workshop focuses on common lower back injuries and anatomical issues that occur among children aged 2.5 to 15, typically observed in a dance environment, from the perspective of an experienced Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Ballet dancers are susceptible to injuries as they are constantly putting stress and strain on their bodies and feet. Using case studies and demonstrations, participants will gain knowledge of the signs and symptoms of common injuries and anatomical problems in the foot, ankle, hip and knee areas, as well as conditions such as scoliosis, spinal fracture, shin splints, and hyperextension. Participants will also gain an understanding of how to identify injuries and conditions, allowing them to reflect and adapt their teaching methods based on each student’s situation. Additionally, participants will learn how acquiring the knowledge of injuries can help students dance safely, seek medical assistance in an early stage to hopefully avoid surgical procedures, and enjoy a long and prosperous dancing life.

Aims

The aim of this workshop is to equip participants with knowledge and understanding of basic anatomy and concepts in common bone and joint conditions and injuries.

Learning outcomes

  • Have a greater understanding of basic anatomy and physiology of bone, joint and tendon structure,
  • Have a greater understanding of common signs and symptoms of common injuries and conditions, such as scoliosis, spinal fracture, hip and knee issues, hyperextension, as well as foot and ankle problems,
  • Learn basic techniques to identify basic injuries that can occur in dance lessons, and
  • Have a greater understanding of the importance of early detection of conditions that will impact children’s health and safety in dance.

Recommended preparation:

  • Wear comfortable clothing and shorts. Prepare a list of questions before the workshop, and submit it to the RAD Hong Kong office at hello@radhk.org, for Dr Liu to prepare and focus on specific topics concerning among the participants.

Speaker:

Dr KL Liu is an orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in children’s orthopaedics and scoliosis.
Through his work in a tertiary referral centre in Hong Kong and voluntary service trips to rural China, Dr Liu gained experience in different aspects of children’s orthopaedics that encompass disorders from birth to adolescence. He also focuses on scoliosis surgery, minimally invasive fracture management, limb lengthening and deformity correction.
Dr Liu was appointed as the Honorary Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2006. During his service in the hospital, his team introduced complete thoracic pedicle screw instrumentation, minimally invasive spinal surgery, and navigation-guided scoliosis surgery. The same team was also involved in research on the aetiology and bracing of scoliosis. They explored potential applications of new technologies to improve the safety and precision of complex orthopaedic procedures. Examples include: the introduction of the Taylor Spatial Frame in Hong Kong in 2005; the use of special computer software to assist complex deformity correction; and the use of surgical navigation and 3D-printing to design patient specific instruments. Dr Liu has researched and published on scoliosis and paediatric orthopaedic related topics. He regularly teaches and shares his clinical experience in professional meetings, training workshops and public lectures.
