Advanced 1 and 2 (Female): Focus on Variations Live Stream CPD Course

A practical course in which participating teachers will gain a detailed understanding of the steps and movements of each of the variations at Advanced 1 (Female) and Advanced 2 (Female) levels. Learning activities will focus on the development of correct technique through the progression of vocabulary, differences in music and style for each variation. The course will also provide the opportunity to discuss the related examination assessment criteria and exercises for the development of correct technique.

Aim

The aim of this practical course is to boost participants’ confidence in teaching the variations for the Advanced 1 (Female) and Advanced 2 (Female) syllabi through enhancing their knowledge and understanding of technique, style and musicality.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the technique and movement quality in each variation,
  • demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the correct style and performance elements for each variation, and
  • discuss musical interpretation.

Participants will have knowledge and understanding of:

  • approaches to help their learners develop expressive and confident performance,
  • the relationship between elements of technique, style, musicality and overall performance outlined above, and
  • the assessment criteria for examinations.

Dates and Times

There are two time options. This course will be split across two days, you must attend both sessions.

Option 1

16 February and 17 February, 9am – 12pm GMT each day

Option 2

16 February and 17 February, 1 – 4pm GMT each day

This course will not be recorded.

Platform

This activity will be hosted on Zoom. You will be sent details of how to join the activity within five working days prior to the start date.

Resources

You will require the following resources:

  • A computer/laptop/tablet with internet connection, a camera and microphone

This is a practical course, please ensure you have space to move in order to actively participate.

Recommended Preparation

Participants should familiarise themselves with Benesh Movement Notation (BMN) and/or the word notes for the variations, and study the vocabulary in the variations and refer to the Foundations of Classical Ballet Technique publication to ensure that they have an understanding on how the movements and steps should be executed.

Tutor

Blanca Cortés

Born in Madrid, Blanca studied ballet and graduated from the Real Conservatorio Superior de Danza. After being awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Culture in Poland, she trained for two years with Panstwowa Szkola Balletowa in Warsaw, dancing small roles with Polish National Ballet, in addition to her studies in Conservatorio de Madrid.

Blanca then continued her training at the Arts Educational School in London for two years, winning the Markowa Award in 1993.

As a professional dancer, she has performed with various companies, including Ballet de Euskadi, Ballet de Mediterráneo (under the direction of Fernando Bujones), and Ballet de Zaragoza (under the direction of Aratxa Argüelles and Harold King). As a soloist, she has worked with many prestigious choreographers.

In 2005, she completed the Royal Academy of Dance Teaching Certificate, becoming a Registered Teacher. In 2009, the Spanish Ministry of Education validated her Higher Education Studies in the specialty of Choreography and Dance Interpretation Techniques.

Blanca has taught in many ballet schools and for intensive courses as a freelance teacher. She has been a jury member at Premi Beca Roseta Mauri and has also been part of the faculty for the RAD Summer School in Italy.

Since 2014 Blanca has been an RAD tutor and mentor for the CBTS and CDT programmes, as well as for CPD, in addition to being an RAD Examiner.
