The aim of this workshop is to equip participants with knowledge and skills in identifying common lower limb injuries through basic clinic examination and exercise sequences to prevent common injuries, to help dance students enjoy dancing in a safe environment.

This half-day interactive workshop focuses on common lower limb injuries and anatomical issues which occur among children aged 2.5 to 15, typically observed in a dance environment. The workshop will be delivered by an experienced paediatric orthopaedic surgeon and a physiotherapist.

Ballet dancers are susceptible to injuries as they constantly put stress and strain on their bodies and feet. Using case studies and demonstration by a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, participants will gain knowledge of the signs and symptoms of common injuries and anatomical problems in the spine, hip, knee and ankle areas, as well as conditions such as scoliosis, spinal fracture, shin splints, and hyperextension.

Participants will learn how to conduct basic clinical examinations to identify injuries and body conditions of dancers; and attain knowledge of some practical muscle strengthening and stretching exercises from an experienced physiotherapist to prevent common injuries seen among dancers.

By gaining the knowledge and understanding of common injuries and how to prevent them, participants can adapt their teaching methods based on each dancer’s body condition to reduce the risk of injury and increase the longevity of each dancer’s journey.

Dr KL Liu is an orthopaedic surgeon with special interest in children’s orthopaedics and scoliosis.

Through his work in a tertiary referral centre in Hong Kong and voluntary service trips to rural China, Dr Liu gained experience in different aspects of children’s orthopaedics that encompasses disorders from birth to adolescence. He also focuses on scoliosis surgery, minimally invasive fracture management, limb lengthening and deformity correction.

Dr Liu was appointed as the Honorary Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2006.

During his service in the hospital, his team introduced complete thoracic pedicle screw instrumentation, minimally invasive spinal surgery, and navigation-guided scoliosis surgery. The same team was also involved in research on the aetiology and bracing of scoliosis. They explored potential applications of new technologies to improve the safety and precision of complex orthopaedic procedures. Examples include: the introduction of the Taylor Spatial Frame in Hong Kong in 2005; the use of special computer software to assist complex deformity correction; and the use of surgical navigation and 3D-printing to design patient specific instruments.
