13 January: Principles and Practices of Adapting Ballet Repertoire for Older Learners, 9am – 12pm
This three-hour practical workshop is designed for ballet teachers to extend their knowledge of adapting ballet repertoire for adults and older learners in a safe and engaging way. As well as learning ballet repertoire for performance purposes, dance teachers often draw on other contextual aspects of the works in order to provide a rich and holistic learning and performance experience for their students. Through learning about the historical, social and cultural perspectives of the ballet repertoire, students are able to extend their engagement in ballet classes beyond that of performance alone.
Another key focus of this workshop is to expand expertise and knowledge of andragogy as an approach to teaching that facilitates learning for adults who are self-directed learners. The workshop will deliver a greater understanding of how ballet repertoire can be taught in an interactive, accessible, and inclusive manner to older learners. During the workshop, participants will collectively explore ideas as to how different approaches and teaching strategies can be drawn on when planning and teaching ballet repertoire in ballet classes for older learners. In this workshop examples of repertoire will be taken from Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, and Coppélia. These examples can be used in the participants’ own classes along with their own adaptions of other ballet repertoire of choice. The workshop will complement and enhance the Silver Swans® Workshop.
