The Fonteyn 2021 begins today

The Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition, formerly known as the Genée, begins online today.

114 candidates from 17 countries are participating in the initial stage of the competition. Each will receive one-to-one coaching online for a Classical and Dancer’s Own variation.

Commenting on the high number of applications, the RAD's Artistic Director, Gerard Charles said: "We are so pleased that our wish to make The Fonteyn competition more accessible to our dancers has received such a positive response and that we have a record number of applicants for this year’s first round. I believe that the coaching our candidates receive is such a valuable experience, and one that can be even more helpful if received far enough ahead of the first round of judging to allow the dancer a chance to assimilate and to feel comfortable with any new insights. We have such an exciting array of coaches, and I wish to thank them for their willingness to share their knowledge with our dancers. I trust you will all have an enjoyable and rewarding experience, and I look forward to seeing your dancing."

The international team of coaches for this year's competition includes Principal Dancers of companies such as the Royal Ballet and Australian Ballet, to Artistic Directors of world recognised dance companies.

The best of luck to all candidates!
