Resilience is often considered a desired quality among dancers, representing their ability to ‘bounce back’ from rejection or failure. But in reality, resilience is more complex!
In this session delivered by Dr Imogen Aujla, an award-winning dance psychology specialist, we will define resilience as it relates to both dancers’ personal qualities and the learning environments that teachers create. Strategies for building resilience will be introduced, and we will debate the extent to which teachers should provide challenges aimed at enhancing resilience – and the ethical implications of doing so.
About the speaker

Dr Imogen Aujla
As a dance psychologist specialist, I focus on enhancing the psychological wellbeing of dancers via psychological coaching, resource development, and research. I have worked with individuals and organisations internationally, and have published over 30 peer-reviewed articles. My research interests include inclusion in dance, talent development, and the working lives of dancers – all underpinned by the psychological wellbeing of dancers. In addition to my freelance work, I am a regular guest tutor on the MAS Dance Science at the University of Bern, a peer mentor for Mind, and sat on the mental health advisory group of IADMS for 4 years.
