James Groom
Benesh for Beginners Tutor
James began his dance training in Essex, studying various styles and earning teaching qualifications with the NATD in ballet, tap, modern, and freestyle. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded Honorary Membership in 2024.
In 2016, he moved to London to attend the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), where he specialised in ballet teaching and obtained a BA (Hons) in Ballet Education. He also achieved the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Dance (LRAD) and became an RAD Registered Teacher (RAD RTS).
Furthering his academic pursuits alongside his teaching career, James qualified as a Benesh Movement Notator in 2022 after completing the Professional Award in Benesh Movement Notation (PABMN). Most recently, he earned an MA in Education from the University of Reading, where he was awarded the title of most outstanding postgraduate student. His research focused on the professional identity of ballet teachers, exploring how individual agency and teaching philosophies interact with societal expectations and institutional structures. He is currently undertaking a PhD that continues this line of inquiry, investigating the professional identities of ballet teachers and exploring the potential use of BMN as an innovative research tool.
James has previously worked for Benesh International as the Benesh International Lead Officer, where he assisted in the coordination of the new membership scheme, the development of the Stagers Programme and co-hosted the Benesh International Congress 2025.
Currently, James is a Lecturer in Dance Education with the Faculty of Education at the RAD, teaching across both university and non-university validated programmes. Beyond his roles at the RAD, James is an active freelance dance educator and researcher, committed to inspiring the next generation of dancers and teachers.
