Dance, as a performance art, is a medium where performers are closely scrutinised. This perpetual observation of one’s body and its movement can take its toll in developing a sense of self, especially at times of pressure. If dance students and performers do not adopt a realistic sense of self, this may result in low self-esteem related to poor body image. Body image is not solely the creation of the individual mind, but is the dancer’s interpretation of their body based on social expectations.
This interactive webinar will examine a range of influences over dancers’ self-concepts, how they build their body image, and what we as dance teachers may do to help them have realistic expectations.
Aims
The aims of this webinar are to:
- enhance understanding of self-concept, body image and self-esteem, and
- make links between these mental states and behavioural outcomes.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the webinar, you will:
- have an enhanced understanding of how dancers’ internal mental states impact on performance,
- be able to link such states of mind to poor mental wellbeing, and
- be able to identify potential causes of poor self-perception.
