This practical course will provide ballet teachers with a good understanding and knowledge of the Female development exercises and variations from Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3.
Participants will gain insights into the concepts which underpin the structure, content and teaching of Discovering Repertoire which provides flexibility in how each of the units is delivered (e.g. as stand-alone units or in conjunction with each other). The course will also provide practical, technical, artistic and musical insights into the teaching of these development exercises and variations in Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3.
The following variations will be covered:
- Level 2: Variation 1 from Coppélia (Act ll; Swanilda, Spanish)
- Level 2: Variation 2 from Giselle (Act l from the Peasant Pas de Deux)
- Level 3: Variation 1 from The Sleeping Beauty (Act lll, Princess Florine)
- Level 3: Variation 2 from Paquita (Act l, 1st Variation from the Pas de Trois)
Aims
The aims of this course are to:
- Equip ballet teachers with knowledge and understanding of the vocabulary and technique employed in the Female development exercises and variations from Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3,
- Enhance ballet teachers’ knowledge and understanding of the classical ballet repertoire in Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3, and
- Provide ballet teachers with practical, technical, artistic and musical insights in the teaching of the Female development exercises and variations in Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, participants will:
- Have knowledge and understanding of teaching the Female development exercises and variations from Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3, and
- Have insight into the practical, technical, artistic and musical concepts of the Female development exercises and variations from Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3, and how the content can be adapted for a wide range of learners.

This course will be split across two days:
- 26 February, 9.30am – 12.30pm GMT
- 27 February, 9.30am – 12.30pm GMT
You must attend both sessions. This course will not be recorded.

You will require the following resources:

This is a practical course, please ensure you have space to move and have your camera turned on to actively participate.
Recommended Preparation
Participants are strongly advised to familiarise themselves with the development exercises and variations from Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3; word notes, Benesh notation, and the DVDs/videos on the RAD app.
Tutor
Beverley Spencer MA ARAD CBTS RTS AISTD DDI RAD Examiner
Beverley is a graduate of Royal Holloway University of London with a Master of Arts with Distinction. An Associate of the RAD, Beverley holds Registered Teacher Status with the Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies and Diploma in Dance Instruction with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance.
Beverley has over three decades dance teaching experience throughout an extensive career as a dancer and choreographer with various companies for theatre productions, TV, and the music industry. In 2000, as lecturer and head of dance and drama departments in Post 16 education colleges and secondary schools in Lincolnshire, she introduced BTEC Dance and GCSE Dance onto the curriculum.
In the role of principal and director of Palma’s most prestigious ballet school, she created dance productions for the Auditorium de Palma for ten years. There, her teaching focused on classical technique, she entered students for grades and vocational exams and mentored teachers for the CBTS qualification.
Beverley was appointed Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance in 2017, and CPD Tutor shortly after, and continues to teach in schools and colleges throughout the UK and Europe.
She recently joined the Royal Ballet School teaching team for the Northern associates programme. Many students go onto vocational training, and work in the industry, and achieve medal success at reputable competitions including the silver medallist and Audience Choice Award winner at The Fonteyn International Ballet competition 2024.
