Pointe Work: From Beginners and Beyond CPD Workshop (London, UK)
This one day practical workshop is designed to increase a ballet teacher’s confidence and knowledge of teaching pointe work to students at different stages of training. The workshop charts preparation and training progressions which underpin the requisites of pointe work. Participants will be introduced to, and explore through discussion, the vocabulary of pointe work from Intermediate Foundation through to more advanced levels of training. Examples of training exercises which prepare students for the progressive demands of pointe work, as well as strategies for implementing training exercises, will be explored.
Aims
The aims of this workshop are to:
- Gain knowledge and understanding of the evolution of pointe shoes and the fitting and maintenance of pointe shoes,
- Improve the participants’ knowledge and understanding of pointe work with a particular focus on how to prepare and train pointe work across different stages of training and proficiency, and
- Share and discuss ideas on creating and teaching preparatory exercises, training exercises and pointe work enchaînements.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the workshop you will:
- Have knowledge and understanding of the evolution of pointe shoes, fitting and maintenance of pointe shoes,
- Have knowledge and understanding of the principles (anatomical readiness and technical competencies) which indicate when students are ready to commence pointe work,
- Have developed skills to create preparatory exercises, training exercises and pointe enchaînements for different levels of study,
- Have knowledge and understanding of the needs of different students when teaching pointe work, and
- Have developed different approaches and strategies for teaching pointe.

Recommended Preparation
Participants should read the sections on pointe work in the following RAD publications: The Foundations of Classical Ballet Technique and The Progressions of Classical Ballet Technique.
Tutor
Hilary Clark ARAD (Dip PDTC) RAD RTS
Hilary trained at Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and after graduation joined Scottish Ballet, performing in all the major classics and new works, after which she toured extensively with London City Ballet and then graduated with Honours from the RAD’s PDTC course.
Hilary was Assistant Director at Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and has taught at Elmhurst Ballet School, Laine Theatre Arts and London Junior and Senior Ballet, Central School of Ballet and at the RAD Dance School where she continues to teach. Hilary has conducted teacher’s CPD courses throughout the world, taught the Phyllis Bedells Bursary class and has worked as the senior tutor for the PDTD London course and led and assessed the classical section of PDTD, China.
Hilary has been an external dance assessor worldwide, judged Dance Challenges in London, USA and Malaysia, choreographic awards, scholarships and the Solo Seal, London. In 2017 Hilary worked as the Artistic Consultant for Dance Proms at The Royal Albert Hall.
At the invitation of Lynn Wallis, in 2013 Hilary taught and coached the candidates of The Genée International Ballet Competition (now known as The Fonteyn) in Glasgow and again in London 2015, Lisbon 2017, and Toronto 2019. At Genée in Antwerp, 2014 and Genée in Hong Kong, 2018, she was privileged to have been invited to produce the competition, coach and teach the ‘on stage’ ballet class. In 2021 Hilary was part of the international online team conducting Dancer’s Own and Classical Repertoire coaching in 10 countries on Zoom.
