Refresh your teaching of the RAD Grades 1–3 syllabi through this practical, interactive course. Gain deeper insight into select set exercises and dances, while exploring engaging, student-focused training exercises that support learning and progression.

Aims

The Syllabus Strategies Course is designed to:

Look in depth at the philosophy of the work,
Offer a chance to improve understanding of specific areas within the syllabus, particularly in regards to technical, musical and performance aspects of the work, as identified by examiners during examinations,
Reflect on the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and dances,
Provide a platform to discuss, explore and develop strategies to strengthen areas of the work, and
Support the creation of development exercises for Grades 1 – 3 students by defining the requisite skills and knowledge to do so.

Participants will be better able to understand the ‘how’ of teaching the syllabus, increase knowledge of the assessment criteria and gain insight into how the candidates are generally coping in the examinations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will:

Be able to demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the technique(s) at each level,
Be able to discuss the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and dances, and
Have knowledge and understanding of approaches to help their learners develop the necessary strength and understanding to achieve the requirements of the assessment criteria in the examination.

Dates and Times

This course will be split across two days:

23 September, 9.30am – 12.30pm BST
24 September, 9.30am – 12.30pm BST

You must attend both sessions. This course will not be recorded.

A computer/laptop/tablet with internet connection, a camera and microphone
Speakers

This is a practical course, please ensure you have space to move and have your camera turned on to actively participate.

Recommended Preparation

Participants should have knowledge of the exercises and dances of the RAD Grades 1–3 syllabi.

Tutor

Ruth Henry BA Hons LRAD ARAD RTS

Ruth graduated from the BA (Hons) in Ballet Education degree course, and attained the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Dance (LRAD). She currently works as a freelance ballet teacher in London, UK and the surrounding areas, and tutors on numerous RAD teacher training programmes, including the LRAD. Ruth joined the panel of RAD examiners in December 2021.
