Step into the world of ballet and contemporary dance with this three-year, full-time degree. This programme combines the study of ballet and contemporary technique and performance, choreography, dance science, dance histories, and education studies. You will study through a blend of practical and theoretical learning, plus hands-on teaching experience to build your confidence in the studio and beyond. This programme will develop your knowledge, build your confidence and prepare you for a successful future in dance education.

Your student experience
In your first year, you will spend most of your time in technique and practical classes covering dance repertoire, choreographic practices and applied dance science. You will also observe dance teaching in practice across a range of contexts.
In your second and third years, the focus shifts to developing your skills as a dance teacher while continuing to develop your performance and choreographic practices. You will also undertake a number of practical teaching placements supported by experienced mentors.

Programme Content
This three-year full-time taught degree focuses on ballet and contemporary technique and performance, dance histories and analysis, dance science, choreography and education studies. The programme attracts both UK and international students, who make the most of their time in London with its diverse, innovative, and world-class arts and theatre culture.
The BA (Hons) Ballet Education programme is delivered across two semesters each year, with a compulsory Undergraduate Induction taking place for new students prior to the start of your studies in Semester 1. Modules integrate practical and theoretical study as well as hands-on practical teaching experience.
Year 1
Level 4
Get ready for an exciting mix of technique and practical classes, where you’ll dive into dance repertoire, choreographic exploration, and applied dance science. You’ll also observe dance teaching in action, gaining valuable insight across a range of learning environments while exploring dance history and analysis. Assessments are designed to be inclusive, varied, and engaging, ensuring you develop a well-rounded skill set. You’ll be evaluated through group and solo performances, essays and case studies, presentations and written reflections.
Year 2
Level 5
This is where the focus shifts towards developing your teaching skills, while continuing to grow as a performer and choreographer. You’ll refine your technical abilities, enhance your choreographic creativity, and deepen your understanding of dance from historical, scientific, and critical perspectives. You’ll take on practical teaching placements, working alongside experienced mentors to gain real-world experience that will prepare you for a successful future in dance education. You will be evaluated in solo performances, choreographic showcases, practical teaching assessments and essays.
Year 3
Level 6
This is where you shape your future and get to choose your focus, honing your expertise with a chosen elective in either performance, choreography, dance science, or critical studies. (Please note that not all elective options run yearly.) In the professional placement and career preparation module, you will step into the role of a dance teacher and remain with the same students all year, witnessing their progress and growth firsthand. You will also undertake a dissertation that builds on the skills and knowledge you’ve developed through your studies and this can be presented either as a lecture demonstration with shorter written dissertation or as a wholly written dissertation. Your final year evaluations are designed to showcase your strengths in multiple ways including performances, choreographic showcases, practical teaching assessments, essays and infographic with written rationale, a viva voce professional discussion, and final dissertation.
