Access routes to RAD Registered Teacher Status
RAD RTS opens the door to benefits designed to improve your teaching and bring recognition of your skills and experience. This allows you to enter students for our exams and inclusion in our Register of Teachers.
You can become eligible for RAD RTS by completing one of our undergraduate, postgraduate or RAD Award programmes. If, however, you are a dance student or recent graduate studying with another provider, you may be able to gain RAD RTS by studying on one of our Access Routes.
For more information take a look at our prospectus.
Access Route (Degree Track)
This is for dance students (or recent graduates), completing an honours degree in dance with another provider, that includes modules on Dance Pedagogy and Ballet Technique as part of the programme.
The Access Route (Degree Track) can be studied alongside your degree and is delivered over two years, needing 450 study hours. You will study three compulsory distance-learning modules including Ballet Vocabulary, Ballet Technique, and Ballet Pedagogy. Each module is supported by comprehensive online study materials and group discussions via our student forums. You will receive three hours of tutoring time per module.
To become eligible for RAD RTS, you must have completed your degree with the Access Route (Degree Track).
Entry Requirements
You must be a current dance student or recent graduate (within two years of qualification), studying for an honours dance degree including Dance Pedagogy and Ballet Technique modules. In addition to submitting an application form, you must provide evidence (e.g. a programme specification or module outlines) that you have studied and been assessed in the relevant subject areas.

It can be studied alongside your vocational training so that once you have completed your course and Access Route (Vocational Track) you will be eligible to apply for RAD RTS.
The Access Route (Vocational Track) is delivered over two years, requiring 600 study hours. You will study four compulsory distance-learning modules including Principles of Learning and Teaching in Dance, Ballet Vocabulary, Ballet Technique, and Ballet Pedagogy. Each module is supported by comprehensive online study materials and group discussions via a student forum. You will receive three hours of tutoring time per module.
Entry Requirements
You will need to be over 16 years of age and a current dance student, or a recent graduate within two years of qualification, studying full-time (over 30 hours a week) at an accredited vocational dance training provider. This can be within a school with government recognition for funding, or an independent private dance school.

Language of Delivery
The language of delivery is English. If this is not your first language, we recommend you visit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) website to assess your level of language competency. Although a language test is not a condition of entry, it is a good indicator of the standard of English needed for you to be able to complete your studies. You should meet the requirements for a score of 6 overall.
Additional Study Materials
In addition to the course materials provided through our Virtual Learning Environment, you will need to buy or have access to selected RAD syllabus resources (books, DVDs, CDs) and educational texts. Full details of the additional study resources will be provided once you have been offered a place.
Applying via an Approved Partner
If you are applying via one of our approved providers (Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts HKAPA, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, USA, Preston College, UK) you must still submit an application form. Applications from students and recent graduates (within two years of graduation) from approved providers are automatically accepted onto programme.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any bursary/scholarship funding I can access?
At this time there is no funding that the RAD can offer towards the Access Routes.
Why are there only 3 hours of tutoring?
Access Routes are a student-led learning experience, allowing you to take ownership of your educational experience. They foster independence and encourage active engagement in the learning process. This duration strikes a balance between providing guidance and resources while empowering you to learn outside of structured sessions.
What happens if I get injured/am ill before a practical assessment?
Extensions to assessments can be applied for if evidence for extenuating circumstances, such as injury, can be provided. To do this students should contact registry@rad.org.uk.
I’ve talked to a tutor at my provider but I still have questions. Is there someone at the RAD I can talk to?
For further questions, please email faculty@rad.org.uk.
