A one-day practical course in which participants will gain an understanding of how to
teach the Advanced 1 (Female) syllabus. Learning activities will focus on the
understanding of appropriate development exercises to encourage an accurate
interpretation of the criteria used in the mark scheme of the examination.
Aims
The aim of this course is to discuss and develop strategies and development
exercises to support Advanced 1 (Female) students in their learning,
understanding and embodiment of the syllabus work.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, you will:
- Have a greater understanding of the technique required at the level,
- Have greater knowledge of the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and variations, and
- Have a greater understanding of how to best support learners in their development of the necessary physical, musical and artistic demonstration to achieve the requirements of the assessment criteria in the examination.
Recommended Preparation
Knowledge of the exercises and variations of the RAD Advanced 1 (Female) syllabus.
We recommend bringing pens, pencils, paper, or your preferred materials for taking notes on the day.

Crystal is an appointed RAD Examiner, RAD CPD tutor, RAD CDT tutor.
Crystal received her early ballet training at Jean M Wong Ballet School in Hong Kong, where she completed her RAD examinations and received scholarships in their International Summer Dance Schools. She then pursues full time training at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). Crystal has obtained her BA (Hons) in the Art and Teaching of Ballet at the College of the Royal Academy of Dance London Headquarters, graduated under the University of Durham. She then moved to Melbourne, Australia, where she further pursue her study in Graduate Diploma in Choreography at the Victorian College of the Arts and obtained her post-graduate diploma from the University of Melbourne. Trained and worked under Craig Phillips, she became a certified Pilates Instructor at Dance Medicine Australia (DMA) since 2000 and has worked closely with dancers in Australia. Her days in Melbourne working closely with Gelsey Kirkland at Dance World 301 allowed her to gain insights of the art of fostering artistry from the great artist.
Currently base in Sydney Australia as a freelance teacher, she regularly shares her knowledge to local studios. She also tutors at RAD intensives holiday courses locally, interstate and abroad to help prepare students for RAD Examinations.
Crystal has guest teach for various schools in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and around Australia. She has toured to Perth, Melbourne, and Auckland, New Zealand with International Ballet Workshops (IBW) and RAD International Summer School in Malaysia, guest teaching alongside world renown teaching faculty in the industry. Her involvement in dance adjudication, includes Canberra Dance Festival and Scholarship Audition Classes at Betsy Sawers Grades & Vocational Awards hosted by RAD ACT Panel, Shirley Treacy Awards hosted by the RAD QLD Panel and RAD Advanced 1 Bursary hosted by the RAD NSW Panel.
Upon completing the prestige RAD examiner’s training program under the guidance of former Artistic Director of RAD Paula Hunt and has been serving for the RAD examiners’ panel and travels regularly for RAD examination tours around the world.
The invitation to take on the role as a Practical Teaching Supervisor for the former teacher training course CBTS in 2020, allows her to pass on her knowledge to the younger generation of ballet teachers. She continues to do so in their current Certificate of Dance Teaching teacher training course as an appointed tutor. With her role as an RAD CPD tutor, allows her to share her knowledge with practicing RAD teaching members globally.
She enjoys meeting new people and is grateful to share her teaching in hope to inspire and be inspired by everyone who crosses path.
