INSPIRE Biennial event and awards
The next INSPIRE 14+ Dance Scholarship event will take place in Wellington 2026
INSPIRE offers 3 awards
- The INSPIRE Award – $8,000
- The Elvira Macrae Award – $6,000
- The Sir Jon Trimmer Award – $4,000
Each of the Finalists are awarded The Gloria Macrae Finalists’ Award of $500
Candidates perform:
- An open class of 1.5 hours
- Two Studies
- A classical variation chosen from the listed classical 19th Century repertoire variations
- The RAD Centenary Variation, choreographed by Sarah Foster-Sproull
8-10 finalists are selected to perform their classical variation and the RAD Centenary Variation again in the evening.

Music and Variation
The INSPIRE 14+ Dance Scholarship comprises an Open Class, two Studies, a Classical Variation and the RAD Centenary Variation. The Classical Variation is chosen from the listed classical 19th-century repertoire variations.
Please note: For ease of reference, we have retained the terms male and female for the variations in some places as these have traditionally been performed in this way. However, candidates may choose any of the classical variations they wish to perform regardless of these traditional terms.

All candidates will perform Study 1 – Allegro with Batterie
Candidates will choose to perform one of the following studies
Study 2 – Grand Allegro (to be performed by dancers who identify as female)
Study 3 – Grand Allegro (to be performed by dancers who identify as male)

- Coppélia Act I, Swanhilda (A short introduction has been added to this music to give the dancer the opportunity to be ready for the start of the variation)
- Swan Lake Act 1, Pas de Trois, 1st female variation
- Napoli Pas de Six, 5th variation

Criteria for Judging
Students will be judged throughout the class, studies and variations on their ability to show the following interrelated elements, all of which make up the complete dancer.
Technique incorporating correct posture and weight placement, co-ordination, control, line, spatial awareness and dynamic values.
- In pointe work, female students will be judged on their ability to perform a varied range
of movements with strength and ease. - In allegro, male students will be judged on their ability to perform varied levels of elevation with agility and ease.
Music incorporating correct timing, rhythm, response to phrasing, dynamics and atmosphere.
Performance incorporating expression, interpretation, communication and projection.

Entry requirements
Applicants are eligible to enter INSPIRE provided they:
- have received training in New Zealand for a minimum of one year prior to the closing date of the Scholarship and are resident in New Zealand;
- are current members of the Royal Academy of Dance;
- are of non-professional status;
- have passed the Royal Academy of Dance Advanced 1 Examination with Distinction, and have not taken the Advanced 2 examination at the time of participating in the INSPIRE 14+ Dance Scholarship;
- and are under 17 years of age as at the date of the event.
Rules
- The Judging Panel will assess the class, studies classical variation and Centenary variation. The decision of the Judging Panel is final
- The INSPIRE Award, Elvira Macrae Award and Alexander Grant Training Award, are awarded for further Classical Ballet training
- The Scholarship winner must commence further study within twelve (12) months of the date of the award; this time limit can only be extended at the Academy’s discretion, and any funds not used within five (5) years of the date of the award will be forfeited
- All entries must be made on the official entry form
- All entry forms and payment must be received by closing date
- Students may re-apply as many times as they wish, provided the entry requirements are met
- Students who do not follow the Entry Requirements and Rules may be disqualified
- The Academy reserves the right to alter the Scholarship Rules and Entry Requirements at any time without prior notice
