This series of practice-based courses, which can be taken as stand-alone or as a suite of courses, explore the styles, techniques and movement vocabularies (steps) found in the Russian, Hungarian, Ukrainian and Polish character dances as presented in RAD syllabi. Through creating training exercises, choreographing free enchaînements, and discussing ideas with others, participants will gain a greater appreciation of the different artistic and technical aspects of each character style. Through practice-based tasks, participants will become more confident in choreographing character work settings which are technically and stylistically sound as well as inspiring and enjoyable for students. These courses are essential for all levels of teachers, but in particular for early career (recent graduate) teachers and dance teachers who would like to refresh and extent their knowledge, understanding and skills in teaching character work.

Tutor
Vikki Allport RAD RTS Teaching Diploma (Distinction) RAD Examiner
Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance and a Trustee of the same.
Originally from the northeast of England, Vikki started dancing at the age of 5, through all her RAD grades and eventually embarking on the student teaching certificate of the RAD at 16. At 19 the opportunity came to dance professionally in Spain for two seasons, and her dance and acting skills led to performing in panto back in the UK. After dancing in Abu Dhabi, she eventually settled in Mexico raising her young family and opening her own successful dance school ‘Ballet Studio de Vicky Allport’. Ballet for children was the focus, but she also taught classes in jazz fit and adult ballet. During this time, she also choreographed shows for Mexican pop artistes, performed in music videos, and completed the RAD’s Teaching Diploma.
Returning to the UK 15 years ago, she taught a popular weekly adult class at Brighton College, where she was Head of Ballet for 12 years, teaching all ages from 2 to older adults. Vikki is currently a freelance teacher and coach, and tutors on the RAD’s Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies.
