This half day practical workshop has been designed for trainee and early career RAD ballet teachers, along with RAD ballet teachers wishing to refresh their knowledge, understanding and application of the principles and foundations which underpin RAD syllabi.

The workshop will focus in detail on selected vocabulary and movements as detailed in The Foundations of Classical Ballet Technique and The Progressions of Classical Ballet Technique. Participants will be provided with opportunities to perform, discuss and reflect on the ballet vocabulary which is core to the learning and teaching of ballet, and RAD syllabi. The workshop carries 4 hours of Time-Valued CPD as it is expected participants familiarise themselves with the content of The Foundations of Classical Ballet Technique and The Progressions of Classical Ballet Technique.

Aims

The aims of this activity are to:

  • examine the steps and movements contained in the two publications The Foundations of Classical Ballet Technique and The Progressions of Classical Ballet Technique in the context of the RAD syllabus,
  • understand what the elements, positions and movements are, why they are important and how they should be performed,
  • provide the opportunity for critical analysis of the selected steps and movements,
  • enhance knowledge of the technical foundations of the RAD and other ballet examination syllabi, and
  • gain a practical and critical awareness of the study of classical ballet movements and steps.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the activity, you will have:

  • a more secure understanding of the ballet vocabulary essential for the learning and teaching of ballet,
  • an increased understanding of the technical foundations and progressions of the RAD examination syllabi, and
  • analysed, interpreted and demonstrated with clarity selected vocabulary and movements.

Participants should familiarise themselves with the content of The Foundations of Classical Ballet Technique and The Progressions of Classical Ballet Technique, in particular the introductory essays.

Tutor

Emily Anne Koschyk RAD Teaching Dip Dip LCDD ISTD DDE

Emily trained at London College of Dance and Drama in Bedford and graduated with Distinction in Teaching Studies.

In 1988, she moved to Germany and danced in national television and theatre productions. She taught in various schools around the country before opening her own school in 1998.

During this period, she also led a full-time 3-year teacher-training programme, from which many young aspiring teachers successfully graduated.

In 2020, Emily relocated back to the south of England and now teaches on a freelance basis. She conducts workshops and teaches at various summer schools in Europe.

Since its inception in 2004 Emily has been a tutor for a number of modules of the Royal Academy of Dance’s CBTS and tutors on the PDPTC Programme based in Berlin. She is an examiner and has been invited to be a CPD tutor for all levels from Pre-Primary to Advanced 2 and travels extensively in these roles.
