This half-day practical workshop will introduce the RAD’s Seated Swans resources. The resources have been created to give Silver Swans Licensees examples of appropriate exercises which can be adapted and made relevant for Licensee’s individual learners.

This workshop will give Licensees an opportunity to work through the exercises in analytical detail for the purpose of preparing them to deliver the exercises to their own Silver Swans, if they so choose. The content can be tailored to fit the needs of each Silver Swans class, based on Licensee’s knowledge of their Silver Swans. Participants will have an opportunity to create content which can be shared and explored with peer discussion and feedback. This is not a compulsory syllabus.

Aim

The aims of this workshop are:

  • to provide practical experience of teaching the Seated Swans resource,
  • to provide extension activities based on strengthening and stretching for healthy adults and older adults, and
  • to provide practical experience of creating exercises and activities to suit a range of participants, with attention to safe practice.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the workshop, you will:

  • have an increased understanding of creating a chair based dance class for adults and older adults, and
  • have a greater understanding of how dance, stretching and strengthening can be taught in an interactive, accessible and inclusive manner, allowing access to those who may find a whole standing class too challenging, and introducing extension work for able adults.

Recommended Preparation

Tutor

Sarah Platt PGDT (Dance), BPhil (Hons), RAD RTS, FIDTA, RAD Dip; Dance Ex Dip; Anat Dip.

Sarah has been teaching for over 25 years and is Principal of her own dance school. An interest in more diverse teaching started with research into ‘Inclusive Dance Practice’ at postgraduate level, and developed through participation with the RAD Dance for Lifelong Wellbeing (DFLW) project in 2012. Practice-based research into the benefits and considerations when teaching adults and older learners to dance has interested her ever since.

Following the DFLW project, Sarah explored, delivered, and evaluated ballet lessons for older learners, contributing to working parties looking into RAD provision for adults. From these beginnings came the creation of the RAD Silver Swans® ballet programme; formally launched in 2017. She is regularly involved in tutoring, mentoring and contributing to reports and conferences in order to share best practice and spread her passion for the teaching of dance to older learners. Sarah also trains teachers from a range of settings such as primary school teachers and classical ballet specialists. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the RAD@home programme saw Sarah deliver virtual Silver Swans sessions, providing a wider audience with an insight into learning ballet. The feedback has been hugely encouraging and confirmed the need for more teachers for this age group.
