Top tip

Make it personal. Be intrigued. Forget hair, make-up, location, lens, light, movement. Those don’t mean much if the whole isn’t interesting to you. I have to be excited before taking a photo. That provides the stimulus to sort out the rest.

What makes a great dance image?

A great dance image comes from understanding how to transpose live material into a dead one. Dance is a living, breathing art while dance photography is a set of pixels. Your job is to pack as much emotion and adrenaline into that image.

What’s your favourite dance image you have taken and why?

Being a dancer requires courage. Plenty of rejection happens there and so my favourite image would be of Robyn Begg in Melbourne, Australia. An entire capital city happily tooted away while she sat silently with a smile.
